Religion is indeed a rough term for those without a churchy thing to provide vague cultural in-grouping. E.g., for atheists. So, I categorize!
ideologic: anti-dogmatist (cf. Russell, Dawkins, Hitchens)
theologic: strong atheist (with the poetry of pantheism-- "Saganism")
epistemic: teapot agnostic (Peircian best-model-fitting, aka science at it best)
ontologic: a-posteriori (see "epistemic")
metaphysic: emergent conciousness on physical reality (see "ontologic")
ethic: total individual sovereignty (with humanist sympathies) / non-aggression (with economic utilitarianism when things need get done in common spaces)
philosophic: stoicism (the outlook, not the metaphysics; ends up convergent with zen-ish buddhism most of the time)
I do miss a good, honest, healthy, friendly religious intercourse. Used to have quite the thriving, ongoing discussions back in the dorm. I think this (the Austin imp community writ large, less the message board) is one of the first environments I might feel safe plunging back into that territory.

I agree with several postings here. The closest to me would be what Rev. Maxwell and Ryan Austin said. I call myself Christian because I believe in God/Jesus, but also have strong Tao/Zen leanings. Ryan said it best... my religion is LOVE. That's what truly matters in the end.

I am a secular humanist.
I was raised fake Catholic, or Cat-lick as we call it when you're raised to make your grandparents think your parents are still practicing catholics, so you cram for your first communion in the car on the way over, and have a "sign of the cross" review to make sure you don't do it with your left hand...again. I was baptized as an Episcopalian in the way that Jill described. I almost converted to Presbyterian but was denied due to stomach issues I had that day.
I'm a total Atheist. In the sense that I believe that none of the archetypes humans have invented as our gods are actually our gods. Still open to evidence on the contrary. I do not believe that there is a separate, god-like entity. But I do believe that we are all connected by some sort of force/energy (but that such a force/energy comes from us, not something else.)
so I'm not sure if that's atheist or agnostic. But I'm one of those.

I think it takes a lot of faith to be an atheist...
That said, I say I'm an atheist so I don't have to explain in detail my opposition to organized religion.
