It was just announced and it's not til April. I think there's still time to get in on it through the main people in charge if they're open to the idea.

This doesn't seem like it'd be much of an improv festival in the first place. If they are modeling it after Just For Laughs, emphasis would be placed on solo/stand-up performers and maybe some sketch as well.

I contacted Chris Trew and he said: "We're not taking submissions for the Hell Yes stages at Moontower, we're curating the entire thing (like most TNM events)."

So that's that.

I don't get what that means. What does "curating the entire thing" mean?

Hand-selecting the groups. Like when someone curates a film festival.

I don't really get the term... when I hear "curating" I think of a museum.
The silver knives are flashing in the tired old cafe. A ghost climbs on the table in a bridal negligee. She says "My body is the life; my body is the way." I raise my arm against it all and I catch the bride's bouquet.

It's exactly the same thing. Museum exhibits are curated, meaning the curator hand picked what would go in there. The term implies a purpose or unifying vision guiding the selections. Thus you can have a well-curated store, or a radio show, or a comedy festival.

Austin Secrets has a curator role... it's the person who picks out the secrets for use in the show, and then guides the show along.

WaffleFest and The Marathon are both curated, more or less. Not that I used that term.

Yes, the All Tomorrow's Parties music festivals are a good example of this. Some music figure gets chosen to select the performers themselves. This year Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel is curating, so people can expect to see acts that fit his sensibilities, tastes and goals for the fest.

I imagine this will be pretty much the same deal, but with Chris Trew and The New Movement's sensibilities, tastes and goals replacing Jeff Mangum's. It's starting to become a pretty common practice for certain types of festivals (For a more local example, Fun Fun Fun Fest is largely curated by Graham Williams at Transmission Entertainment, rather than by open submission, which is why we got Danzig twice.)
