Thanks. Do you think I'd have better luck using WMM? I've got that, too - but Premiere has so many more bells and whistles.

I actually tried WMM first but since I'm using the version that came with XP I didn't have (or couldn't find) a lot of the controls for the compression guidelines you linked me to. Do you export as .wmv & that works OK?

I've also got ULead Video studio. Maybe that will work better. I've got a lot of experimenting to do. I'm just pissed off right now because I've got a really nice version of Louder Than Words in Premiere all titled, timelined out, effected and some nice rolling credits. Looks great here - but every time I export it it doesn't look good anywhere except in RealPlayer - go figure.

Lessee... in WMM, if you click the "Home" tab, then "Save Movie", then "Create Custom Setting", it should give you a dialog that lets you name your new custom setting (I created one called "Vimeo (HD)" that I've re-used ever since), and set its Width, Height, Bit rate, Frame rate, and Audio format.  IIRC, it *always* exports as .wmv.

(Then again, I'm using WMM for Windows 7 -- maybe WMM/XP works differently?)

And yeah, there's *got* to be a way to make Premiere to play nice with vimeo.  I'm only using WMM 'cos I'm cheap.

Well, I've got WMM on my Windows 7 machine too. Maybe I should try that.

I'll read up on the others, although after what happened to my perfectly configured Premiere vid I'm a tad leery. I've already spent a ridiculous amount of time learning this. Time well spent, though. Editing (especially in Premiere) is really quite easy. I think it's because vid editing programs (again, especially Premiere) have so many analogues with all my audio editing software. It's not all that different in concept.

I did spot this tutorial for getting Premiere to play nice with vimeo -- dunno if it might be useful.

This looks useful - it even has a screenshot of what everything is supposed to look like. Of course the text is in Italian... lucky I have a basic working knowledge of Romance languages.

I'll try that next. What she is suggesting has some significant differences from the original Vimeo compression guidelines I was using earlier.

Ha! Two hours of rendering time and the file ends up being 764MB. 264MB over my weekly limit unless I feel like paying Vimeo.

I'll have to compress a little more somewhere.

Side note:  I currently have a paid account which gives me 5GB per week.  If any you wind up with a huge file you can't upload, and it's a week when I'm not uploading a ton of shows myself, I might be able to upload it for you.

Actually Premiere does that - but I wasn't paying attention because A) I'm a dolt and B) I had more dental work done and might have been slightly affected by Vicodin.

Believe you me, I wish it were otherwise. I have an unfortunate condition inherited from my mother which has caused enamel to disappear at a furious rate starting in my late 30s. I seem to spend almost as much time at the dentist these days as I do performing improv.

And that's saying something.

Namely, "Ouch".

And, "So, Dr._______, how are your kids enjoying Harvard?"

Thanks, but I think I worked my way around it by using the Adobe encoder, dropping the bitrate a bit and using the variable instead of constant option. I've snuck it in at 495MB. It's not quite as nice as some I've seen on there, so obviously I have a little left to figure out. A lot of motion causes some small lines to appear around the actors. The audio seems to remain more or less intact, tho'.

Really useful for "Louder Than Words" silent improv.

The problem really arose, though, when Vimeo applied it's own compression to the file I uploaded. Then what looked reasonably good on my computer went to hell. More tomorrow after I try uploading it.

I followed the mod link you sent me and got that set up. Thanks for all your help & advice.
