i don't know...SNL's been around for decades. we've also had the Carol Burnett Show, Your Show of Shows, Mad TV and In Living Color over the years (and that's just in America, to say nothing of Fry and Laurie, Mitchell and Webb, French and Saunders, Cook and Moore, Monty Python, Kids in the Hall and Not the Nine O'Clock News), as well as the continued success and popularity of 30 Rock. so i THINK most people would get what you're talking about when you mention sketch comedy, which i think makes the analogy more accurate.

yeah, such maxims are easy to declare and palatable to the uninitiated, but especially when you're trying to boil complex ideas down to bumper sticker manifestos, it's important to still be as accurate as possible. it's also always a good idea to question cliches and conventional wisdom. :)
