If I had to take a guess, marketing. "The Karate Kid" has recognition by most parents as a film they enjoyed. Yeah but the general unwashed sheeple who go pay no attention to the details of movies will get the formula: "New" kid moves to town, gets bullied by local martial arts baddies, finds Asian teacher of martial arts, then goes on to become a master in a short time and beats the bullies, despite the fact they have been probably training from birth and have practiced every damn day of their life. The regular Joe Blow in the audience wants to see "The Karate Kid" and would go to said movie even if the kid was learning Akido, Muy Thai, or Ju Jitsu.
