Austin neighborhood recommendation, please!

Post by jillybee72 »

My brother might move to Austin! He says, "The air pollution is worsening rapidly in Cairo, more to the point it's making Rami [my nephew] sick too often, and since my two USAID projects are ending by March anyway, we are rapidly coagulating on the idea of moving to Austin next fall."

He's looking for recommendations of a neighborhood that (1) has an excellent elementary school (perhaps among those listed below in the Austin School District although we have no idea of the names of nearby school districts.) (2) has good air quality and (3) is not too far from the University of Texas?

not sure if this meets your requirements, but i (and plenty of other native Austin imps) went to school in Round Rock ISD. pretty good schools, air quality's fine and depending where in the district you are, close enough to get to UT in good traffic in 20-30 minutes. hope that's helpful!

My sister's kids go to Kiker! in Circle C (actually, they petitioned to get in, bc they live, near, but are not in Circle C). However, it's south... not near UT. Great school, tho. Lots of family involvement, so they may want to be aware of that. They do fundraisers to get stuff for the kids. They have a robotics program that's fun and cool.

Near UT: Hyde Park. Then the kids would go to Lee (which is for Robert E. Lee, by the way).

I went to Highland Park elementary, which is/was considered pretty good, and is also on your list, which isn't near UT. But isn't too far. It's also somewhat near Far West (where I currently live) which has shuttles directly to UT. So Far West area (Cat Mountain, Highland Hills, those are some area neighborhood names) That's also real close to Doss Elementary, also on your list.

Also, I like Allandale, Brentwood and Crestview. Nice family friendly neighborhoods. They're not real close to UT, but pretty close.

Austin's Downtown is fortunate to be served by two exemplary elementary schools:

Pease - the oldest school in texas - founded 1876 which is in the Original Austin Neighborhood in the historic and leafy northwest corner of downtown.

Mathews - just west of Lamar in the Old West Austin Neighborhood, this school also serves the married student housing at Brackenridge. As a result, the school has one of the more international student bodies in town with many children of foreign grad students attending.

In both cases, they currently accept mostly transfers from all over the city since there aren't as many kids of age in these areas (this will change over time as there's a little baby boom going on and as more young professionals reside downtown). As a downtown resident, I believe you're entitled to attend either. They, along with Austin High, have been the schools for numerous past governors and mayors who resided downtown. All of these areas are also close to UT.

Full disclosure: I don't have kids and have little dealings with the school district - this is mostly second hand information.

Best of luck and i hope your brother decides to make the move!

I second Allendale, Brentwood(my neighborhood! It's awesome!), and Crestview. I also second living in or close to downtown, if he can afford it.

Thank you all for your local knowledge! I am the aforementioned brother, strongly considering Austin in part because of Jill's positive impressions. Thanks for the recommendations. If you happen to know an apartment-hunting agent (is that what they call them?) that you trust, I would welcome a referral. Thanks again.
