24 Hour Sketch Challenge! October 2nd! (Schedule Announced!)

Post by Jastroch »

So many things come in groups of 24: two cartons of eggs, twelve pairs of socks, three packs of hotdogs. But hours? Who would string together 24 hours of anything, let alone the hardest part of comedy: writing it. In a bold move, the brains at ColdTowne Theater have devised a way to string together 24 consecutive hours of sketch comedy mayhem. When have this many hours ever been utilized for such a single-minded purpose? If anybody's done it, we haven't heard from them. That's how dangerous it is.

Competitors in the 24-hour Sketch Brawl will meet at the theater on Friday, October 1st after the debut of the Mainstage Sketch Show (title TBA). At precisely 9:30pm, 8 teams will get a string of suggestions and guidelines to ensure that their show has not been previously written or worked on.

The following evening at 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11pm, teams will put up their shows for judgement. The winning team will receive a prize package in addition to a coveted month long run at ColdTowne Theater!

These shows will benefit the ColdTowne Theater new space fund, so we're asking that everyone buy tickets. If you really can't afford $10 to see your friends and help out ColdTowne, we'll let you in after everyone else has been seated!

Tickets for shows can be purchased online through coldtownetheater.frontgatetickets.com. Group Rates are available by contacting coldtowne@coldtownetheater.com.

SCHEDULE

7pm:
Metropolitan Collection -- The compact profile and simple silhouette of the Metropolitan Collection adds a touch of class to any comedy space. The richly layered cast is beautifully crafted of 5 stylish comedy talents with incredible durability. Nicole is an experienced writer. James, Amy, Mark, and Gene have extensive experience performing improv comedy.

P! Company -- The P! Company is a distinct blend of absurd, smart, and downright strange sketch comedy. Originally based in Katy, TX, The P! Company evolved from playing with video cameras after school into an obsession for its co-founders and long-time friends, Andy Petruzzo and Kyle Sweeney. Featuring material about sci-fi, UFOs, comic books, video games, and other alt fare, there’s something for every kind of nerd out there – even cool nerds. (Geeks need not apply).

8pm:
4-Hole Punch -- Featuring comediennes Maggie Maye, Martha Kelly, Kerri Lendo, Lashonda Lester and a box of Wigs! Writing credits include Conan O Brien and Craig Ferguson. Accolades include Former Funniest Person in Austin Winner, former Funniest Filmaker in Austin Winner and a Former Pimp

My Real Dad -- Rachel and Dave are married. Larry is Rachel's dad visiting for a weekend from Cleveland, OH. Rachel and Dave are professional comedians and alumni of The Second City, the mecca of American sketch comedy. Larry is a 70 year old divorce lawyer and has never performed comedy for an audience. Even though all 3 of them love each other and can easily make each other laugh, none of them are remotely confident this is going to go well.

9pm:
Playa Dynasty -- Playa Dynasty formed as a natural progression from the death of the improv group "No Chaser." They have recently come into vogue from a YouTube video in which LuBu and Michael prepare Bryan Cruz for his one-line role in "Vampires Suck."

Poop InaPants -- Poop InaPants are crazy. Crazy crazy people. None of us them ever done a real sketch show before. Featuring Meredith Newell, Amy York and Sam Malcolm.

10pm:
Your Terrific Neighbors -- We are friends that write down the strange things that give us joy and amusement and then we perform them in spaces where people are allowed to come and watch us. Featuring Curtis Luciani, Joel Osborne and Courtney Hopkin!

Turn of the Century Paris -- Turn of the Century Paris is an Austin based sketch troupe that defies both logic and gravity. TCP piles on the laughs thick, so thick that it'll keep you warm on those cold Texas nights as you drift off to sleep. Featuring Matt Derman, Ed Reed, Chaz Formichella, Steve Donovan, Kate Bojanek, and Danny Catlow.

11pm:
Crocodile Tears -- Featuring improvisers Hugo Vargas Zesati, Deano Jones and Mike Sullivan!

Starboat! -- Absurd, dark and delightful. Kurt Vonnegut on a blind date with David Lynch run into Dick Van Dyke. Literally. They literally run into him. And share secrets. Featuring Chris Allen, Jeff Britt, Peter Rogers and Ashley Lowe!

They are very friendly, though. I can see how you'd get confused. If you were the kind of person who were easily confused. I am. That's how I know.

Congrats, Neighbors, Dad and Paris!

This was a really fun event. I was sick during it, but still had a great time. Thanks!
