Aren't all wars?

You work your life away and what do they give?
You're only killing yourself to live

Most wars are stupid. Killing someone in the name of a diety seems to be contradictory. "I must kill you for my religion!!"

Though if you worship Mars, or one of the other gods of war, then maybe you can have your holy war, but it better be for a good reason.

"onward christian soldiers" is a terrifying hymn.

Totally with you. Let's not worship Mars, but Venus. A LOT more fun.

but really, aren't all wars holy wars? if you've decided you believe in some abstract principle enough to kill a person you've never meant, haven't you raised that abstract idea -- jihad, national pride, stopping the nazis -- to the level of religious dogma?

I suppose i would say yes, but perhaps the leaders also see war as a chess game for resources or power and only invoke the dogma so the masses go along with what is certainly a horrible action to partake in.
My contribution aside from saying sexually inappropriate things like can you imagine the casualties from a venus war.
Messy floors.

I like how this thread went from being about war to sex. Kind of like all conversations, really.

an anthropologist major friend once told me that history has never given rise to a purely athiest culture, even if some trendsetting european nations are almost there... religion is the basis for most identity, identity=nation, nation=borders, borders=war war war

religion ruins everything.
