i have to say, there's a lot of cheese in that show...but the actor who plays Geoffrey saves it every time.jose wrote:The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is probably one of the most solid mainstream sitcoms in the past 25 years and, I think, verges on classic.
The multi-cam setup and laugh track makes it seem hokey now, but it's good stuff.

right. and i'm saying that's wrong, it pissses me off and i don't think Hollywood should be reenforcing it. hell, it's almost borderline racist..."it's Asian and they're kickin' people, so it must be ka-roddy!"Mike wrote:Yeah but the general unwashed sheeple who go pay no attention to the details of movies will get the formula: "New" kid moves to town, gets bullied by local martial arts baddies, finds Asian teacher of martial arts, then goes on to become a master in a short time and beats the bullies, despite the fact they have been probably training from birth and have practiced every damn day of their life. The regular Joe Blow in the audience wants to see "The Karate Kid" and would go to said movie even if the kid was learning Akido, Muy Thai, or Ju Jitsu. To them it's all 'karate'.the_reverend wrote:yeah, but to me that's like making a movie about a bass player in a punk rock band and calling it "The Jazz Singer." it's got the recognition, sure, but it's not at all accurate. alas...PaulM wrote: If I had to take a guess, marketing. "The Karate Kid" has recognition by most parents as a film they enjoyed. Either encouraging their kids to see the film or the kids asking those parents to take/allow them to see it, the title goes a long way to driving more ticket sales.
it pisses me off even more that the trailer looks so freaking awesome...especially accompanied by Jackie Chan's profound monologue ABOUT KUNG FU! gyah!

Remember, this movie is coming from a town where there are no more original ideas left. They're remaking old TV shows ( THE DAMN SMURFS MOVIE!?!?!) and now they have resorted to taking classic 80's films and re-hashing the plot with new, trendy stars.the_reverend wrote:

Ergo, you will have a racist, rehashed story named "The Karate Kid" which will only resemble the movie in the fact that some kickass old dude teaches some grouchy young kid martial arts because of bullies.
If you want to get pissed off, look at how many movies/tv shows will be films:
Smurfs, The A Team, The Karate Kid, Nightmare on Elm St, and I'm damn sure by 2011 there's an ALF or Punky Brewster movie in the works.
Hollywood sucks.

traffic aside, it's actually pretty awesome. i'll bitch about these Karate Kid shenanigans until i'm blue in the face (Smurf pun unintended, and i'll watch anything with NPH involved). but i'll fly my L.A. colors proudly. :pMike wrote:Remember, this movie is coming from a town where there are no more original ideas left. The city itself as an entity is fine, "Hollywood" as a center for movies, television and creativity sucks on the whole. You get some good gems of movies or tv, but for an industry to remake the Honeymooners, Dragnet, or Car 54 where are you, it shows they generally stoop to re-hashing old ideas. Barb Wire was nothing more than a horrible remake of Casablanca.the_reverend wrote:traffic aside, it's actually pretty awesome. i'll bitch about these Karate Kid shenanigans until i'm blue in the face (Smurf pun unintended, and i'll watch anything with NPH involved). but i'll fly my L.A. colors proudly. :pMike wrote:Remember, this movie is coming from a town where there are no more original ideas left. But I shall never forgive Will Smith for "The Wild West" Bleech.

still disagree. any industry that attempts to be both creative and commercial is going to have its share of crap along with the gems, but it's worth it. heck, Barb Wire is based on a comic book...Star Wars and almost every great early Clint Eastwood movie is just a rehash of Kurosawa. the Dragnet movie was hilarious, and the TV show from a few years back was actually highly underrated. i've got no problem with remaking, revising, rehashing or recycling old ideas as long as the execution is done well. there's plenty of original crap and gems as well. you want to remake Karate Kid? fine, but have him in Japan studying karate. that's my only issue. this new one, as pissed as i am at the title, actually looks like a pretty damn good kung fu movie. i just wish they'd had the balls to let it stand on its own weight instead of feeling the need to attach it to an existing franchise.Mike wrote: The city itself as an entity is fine, "Hollywood" as a center for movies, television and creativity sucks on the whole. also keep in mind that Hollywood is a business. if people buy the crap and ignore the gems, then that shows where the demand is and more crap is produced. so don't blame us in Hollywood, or at least share the blame with every other damn city in the country that's voting with their wallets.

and yes, Wild Wild West is a steaming piece of crap, with a tragically amazing cast. sigh...

i always found it odd that Hot Fuzz cited Bad Boys II...the first one is much better. i guess because they needed the "this shit just got real" line. it DID reawaken my love for Point Break though, my introduction to Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow.Jeff wrote:I've never seen Bad Boys II, but I love Hot Fuzz, and watching Hot Fuzz made me want to see Bad Boys II.
