David Lynch's Lumiere entry

Post by mcnichol »

"This is David Lynch's 55 second short filmed with an original Lumiere camera. 40 international directors were asked to make a short film ... all using the original Cinematographe invented by the Lumière Brothers, working under conditions similar to those of 1895. There were three rules: (1) The film could be no longer than 52 seconds, (2) no synchronized sound was permitted, and (3) no more than three takes. Having seen all of the results (including Spike Lee's pithy effort) Lynch's film is unquestionably the most interesting. It makes me wish he would shoot an entire film with this stock. Remember while watching that all the effects are in-camera and there is no cutting for scenes."

You can get the entire collection from netflix- it's called "lumiere and co." I watched it. There are some very beautiful little films.

I predict Chris Allen will have something to say about this.

The Lynch one is awesome, especially considering that everything had to be shot exactly as it was meant to be edited. Spike Lee shot his as one shot of his (then) new son. A couple of them are amazing. Some are lackluster. I haven't seen this in awhile, but it's great to see how auteurs "today" utilized a camera that is bulky and has so many limitations...but which was the shit in its day.

This was really interesting. I watched it several times, but I still don't get the middle part -- DL's vision of heaven/hell for the dead girl?

i think the middle part is all of the ladie's past indiscretions. ya know, why the cops are coming to take her.
and honestly, is it any surprise that spike lee's film was bad?
the lynch film was dope. reminds me of my old film school days where i did nothing but improv but occasionally caught some good movies at school.

My favorite was of two people kissing. They were very very happy. It made me very very happy. I don't remember which director shot it though.

The girl was abducted by aliens, experimented on, then put back on Earth and found by the police.

Is that right? I enjoy artsy, conceptual stuff as much as the guy on the barstool next to me, but this one is a bit out there for my small mind.

The police aren't coming to take the woman away at the end. They are coming to tell her that her daughter is dead.
