I suppose breaking even is acceptable - but I'd still be rephrasing the question to be "now, how can we make money with this".

First thoughts: the obvious short-term answer - sell advertising
Long term: if you get enough quality material, approach a local publisher and pitch it as something that could go in the "local interest" section of any bookstore's magazine rack.

Oh, and I shall go through notebooks and would love to contribute a piece or two once I get a feel for what the format will be.

yeah, fiscally, the goal for out of bounds is to do cool comedy things that either break even or raise the profile of the rest of the festival. i don't think we should sell ads and i have no idea what the demand would be when we try to sell them, so the ticket would be to get it printed as cheaply as possible and hope for the best.

What do you see as being the distribution of this magazine? Where? How? How many copies?

i'd like to have it available at the box office for all of the shows, maybe bundle it with the t-shirt as a special deal, give it away to good audience members. i don't think charging over $5 for year one would be a good idea, and the best way to insure it does break even is to go small. i'd make it available for purchase online but i don't expect that will garner a lot of purchases.
how many copies is a total mystery to me now. we can make that call when we get a sense of how many people are interested in writing for it. this should gauge general interest or at least get us close.

This is because someone trying to order it at a book store would create a real-life vaudeville routine of Who's On First proportions, and the universe wouldn't allow that.

i love this idea and am infinitely amused that Jeremy proposed it since he never reads.
