I know people (including me) tend to veer away from a lot of 4th Street places, but 219 West's happy hour kicks ass.

The bánh mì sandwiches at T & N Cafe are amazing. Like, I would drive down to Oak Hill regularly to have them. Get the combo bánh mì, with grilled pork, grilled chicken, and pork pate spread. The amazing meat, the fresh veggies, and crispy French roll (it reminded me of po-boy bread) will blow your mind.

tony, the owner makes all of his dough there. thin, crispy but not too crunchy. plus you can order your pie and then run over to my grocery store and grab a sixer to wash it down.

I'd also like to point out that The Little Deli is one of the best sandwich shops in town.

I forgot to mention that I love The County Line and The Salt Lick for BBQ, but there's a little place on east 12th called SAM'S BBQ that is freakin' amazing and small and super Texasy and quaint and awesome.

Maybe I'm one of the few, but I wasn't that impressed by Salt Lick. The blackberry cobbler was good, but the BBQ itself was maybe average.

It's not hipster douchebags that I'm avoiding, but douchebags in general. To summarize as best as I can, Vicci's (closing and becoming a club called Kiss & Fly soon. bleh) in the Fourth Street area is a place where this guy went to film VH1's The Pick-Up Artist, and that bar and the surrounding area is full of guys who might show up on this website.

I'll even say that I don't think many hipsters go to that area. There are likely a lot of douchebags latching onto hipster trends though.

Also, prices tend to be way higher than reasonable there.

Right next to Cafe Caffeine is a cool little Thai grocery and restaurant. It's locally owned and the meat and a lot of the veggies are local/seasonal -- tasty AND socially responsible.

I love trying new places to eat, so I've been taking notes from this thread for where I want to go next.

I agree with so many of the suggestions already, but here are some places I really like that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

Salvation Pizza - delicious thin crust!
Galaxy Cafe - amazing whipped sweet potatoes
East Side Cafe - great brunch menu
Mozart's - awesome turtle cheesecake
Teo Gelato - always has lots of flavors

I'm not sure if it's quite on-topic, but

Cafe Medici has be best(truly devine) coffee in Austin. I have not found a better place, and I'm a fancy coffee boy.

Lots of good places listed here, a couple off the beaten path, to satisfy whoever said they can't find good Mexican or German food:

Oaxacan Tamaleo (now in Bastrop)

Walburg Restaurant and Biergarten (in Walburg)

Oh man, I haven't been there in years! I grew up going to school in Walburg, and I remember them having excellent sausages. But it's German food, so whaddya expect?

Also, if you're out in that area, check out Dale's for some pretty good comfort food & burgers.

Either location has the good stuff. I usually go for an iced coffee. They cold-brew it overnight. It's super-strong and delicious.

I live on 4th st just two blocks away and I have to say that I kinda like the Warehouse District...enough to work for the last year and a half trying to save it from demolition. It's this city's original entertainment (red light) district - originally known as 'Guytown'. I enjoy the adaptive re-use of the structures and streetscape, the vibrancy and the organic variety of offerings...and the resulting mix of partons it attracts. The Gingerman is my favourite bar and I've been a regular there for 7 years and two locations. Folks are free to disagree but I definitely feel like I've had worse experiences with douchebaggery elsewhere in this town.
