...and if you're really into silent films or the recent Alamo Drafthouse offerings (http://blog.originalalamo.com/2009/05/2 ... t-project/) have whetted your appetite, the Ransom Center is also doing a (free) series kicking off with the Rudolf Valentino film The Sheik (1921) on Thursday, June 11, at 7 p.m.

Additional films in the series include The Thief of Bagdad on June 25 and The Adventures of Prince Achmed on July 23.

This program is in conjunction with The Persian Sensation: The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám in the West, on display through August 2. The year 2009 marks the 150th anniversary of Edward FitzGerald’s landmark translation of the poetry of the medieval Persian astronomer Omar Khayyám. These gemlike verses about mortality, fate, and doubt became an unprecedented popular phenomenon in England and America but have since fallen into obscurity. Featuring 200 items from the Ransom Center’s extensive collections, the exhibition narrates The Rubáiyát’s history through such items as Persian manuscripts, miniature editions, and illustrated parodies.

More awesome stuff I have to miss because of work!

I propose we have a silent film marathon at the Hideout one of these days, o glorious leaders. And have one start before I have to go to work.

Krappe. Missing this one... but not as sad as I might have been, since I got to see Buster Keaton's The General with live music a few weeks ago!

well gosh...it's not a silent film...but it's another sorta unique movie going experience at a reasonable price:

Fellini's 8 ½ - Under the Stars
AMOA - Laguna Gloria

Out under the stars by the luxurious Italianate villa on the grounds of the Austin Museum of Art (AMoA)'s Laguna Gloria campus, raise your glass with us to celebrate AMoA's new exhibit The Lining of Forgetting: Internal and External Memory in Art (May 30 - August 9)- it will be a night to remember!

A ticket to this event includes the screening of this extraordinary masterpiece in the outdoor Laguna Gloria amphitheater preceded by an entertaining and enlightening discourse on the subject of memory from an esteemed panel of entertainers and enlighteners, a glass of fine Italian wine and an Italian sampler plate prepared by Alamo executive chef John Bullington!

Here's a taste of cuisine you can expect:
Trout and Fennel Marinated in Blood Orange
Ricotta and Spinach Gnocchi
Portobello-porcini Bruschetta

Tickets are $10 for Members of AMOA & $15 for the General Public.

Fellini attire preferred, which is open to vast interpretation. Please bring your own blanket.

SALUTE!!!
