This thread rocks!! Just wanted to post in it to be IN! Also, I'm listening to quiet. As in, no music. BUT on Friday night, I scored the Get Up show with mostly ALL marches. It was great. ALSO, later this week I'll be starting back up again listening to Aaron Copland so I can prep for the "Pgraph Goes West" which I'll be scoring entirely with Copland music. Hurrah!
Oh snap, Bob, or anybody else who like this kind of thing, you want this!! Another Mississippi Records release, and this thing is one of the most powerful country blues/soul records I've heard in a long time.

Yeah! That record is great. They also put out a single with two more versions of "Depression", one with a full band!shando wrote:Oh snap, Bob, or anybody else who like this kind of thing, you want this!! Shannon, check yo pm.
I'm usually averse to leaks, but my boss found the new Dirty Projectors and St. Vincent records on Friday, so who am I to turn those down? Both sound great, and to compensate for my enabling of the music biz's continued demise, I'll be picking both up on vinyl.

A while back, someone posted about Drumming!! And I meant to respond with a great clip from Joey Baron (Must like Masada to enjoy it – but it’s just about the most amazing drum solo I’ve ever heard - and his version on Bar Kokhba is even longer):

Other than that, I’ve been all over the map lately. For the Mexican contingent, there’s the classic Vicente Fernandez, the more recent Pepe Aguilar, and the surprising little time capsule of the Edyie Gorme Y Los Panchos albums. Linda Ronstadt tried to replicate that same style years later with her album ‘Canciones de Mi Padre’ which is also worth a listen.
For rap, with the recent quotation from MF Doom and tribute album by Mad Lib, I decided to go back to the original J-Dilla masterpiece album. Just can’t get enough of that. Also kicking it with old-school Method Man (who has one of the most perfect voices for rap in my opinion). Also I recently got turned onto this old album by Camp-Lo which arguably refines the sonic use of words over their semantic value.
On the international side, I picked up a CD by Omar Souleyman on the sublime frequency label (http://www.sublimefrequencies.com/) a while ago and had been meaning to share it. I love that label because it takes pride in finding not-just-novel-but-really amazing performers in some pretty offbeat areas (Iraqi film music, Cambodian Pop, North Korean ‘Commie Funk and Agit Prop’, you get the idea…). In addition to that I picked up this great Kronos Quartet CD featuring classic Bollywood singer Asha Bhosle. An elephant makes a cameo - how cool is that?
In the Classical space, I’ve been trying to do a comprehensive survey of contemporary organ music (don’t be impressed by this – there isn’t much of it). One of the best discs musically that I’ve found in this search is Tintinnabulum: Organ Works by Arvo Part which pairs the living Estonian composer with 16th & 17th Century composers in the similar sparse ‘ringing’ style (plus its got cool packaging, too).
Also – Jimmy Smith, bad ass jazz organist, Aloof Proof – chill minimalism and OHM: the early gurus of electronic music – an amazing cd+dvd collection.

So I just ordered tickets to the upcoming Goran Bregovic concert at Bass - http://www.utpac.org/event/goran_bregovic and the best available was a disturbing front row seat. It occured to me that people may not know his stuff. I found him when watching one of the most amazing films ever (seriously top 5 all time list): Underground. A masterful, dark comedy, epic in its scope and both beautiful and sad in its allegory of the Balkan experience in the 20th Century. With both touches of magic realism and excellent contemporary treatments of traditional serbian folk songs, it won Emir Kusterica the 1995 Palm d'Or and really - I just can't recommend this movie enough.
Nor can I help myself from recommending the music (crisper album versions of each of these examples exist online but I love the infectiousness of the live musical experience):

If you like the style, also check out 'Cocek' and 'Kalishnikov'.

Pitchfork tipped me off to this, but it's a lot easier to convince someone to watch a video when they don't have to trail from the thread. Yes, it's Corgan. Yes, it's ridiculous.Roy Janik wrote:Screw you. It's my birthday. Heard some SP on the radio yesterday and realized it's been way too long since I've listened to any of it.

It was the first album that I hated because my little brother played it so often. I still can't stand the popular songs, but I've since re-listened to some of the less over-played tracks and some of it's pretty good.TexasImprovMassacre wrote:Melancholy and The Infinite Sadness was one of the first rock albums I ever bonered out about.
