Side question:  is this the first time we've had a flashback that was contemporaneous with the main storyline? (That first scene was also in the late 70s, no?)

I just watched this last night. Great episode.

I don't buy that Sayid wouldn't make sure that young Ben was dead, that it was a kill-shot. What I'm hoping is that the kid really does die and we get to see how the island really works.

Rachel, I don't remember what the opening scene was and forgot to check it for scram action... maybe I can get ABC.com to work.... edit: nope, will have to watch at home.

Lance : )
opening scene:
boy looking at chickens
mean dad enters & has confrontation with boy about killing a chicken and leaves
enter Sayid as a boy to help his brother and be the central character...
yay scram.

What is scram? I read on the internet that scram is the emergency shutdown of a nuclear reactor.

a scram in an edit / scene set up created by Lance's level 5 class.

the jist of it is this:

one person starts doing something
two person joins and begins the scene
3rd person enters and joins
person one or two leaves
and the rest of the scene takes place between 3rd person and the person who stayed from the set up (person one or two)

Relevant discussion with Jeff about whether the kid died:

Me: I mean, did he get shot in the heart, or could it have been survivable?
Jeff: Well, remember that it was *Sayid* firing the gun.
Me: That's true. Sayid could shoot you in the *toe*, and --
Jeff: -- and that's a killshot, right there.

The scene does not have to be perfect. The scene has to be written.

Juliette to the rescue! Imagine if she saves Ben and that's why he's so in love
with her years later....As an adult, he remembers the face of Juliette...though
doesn't realize it's actually the same woman.
Sometimes it's a form of love just to talk to somebody that you have nothing in common with and still be fascinated by their presence.

Remember, Locke was shot once.

Since Ben seems like such a sweet, abused kid at this point, I'd say this might be (ironically) the turning point in his life, when he learns to be ruthless himself.
