Post by beardedlamb »

being extremely poor has put me in a situation where i am very behind in music.
so, knowing almost nothing about my tastes, what album do you think i should get next?

Sometimes it's a form of love just to talk to somebody that you have nothing in common with and still be fascinated by their presence.

Midgets With Guns, by Pain.

featuring lines such as

"When I look back upon the 80s, I never get pissed off at Ronald Reagan, I never paid attention to him back then...
But that chick who wore the parachute pants, the one who broke my heart, the who brokedanced."

or

"Hey I know why don't I poke out my eyes for you over and over and over and over again?"

or

"Bored, drinking my beer on the floor, surrounded by people I mostly abhor... wanting more."

may i also recommend edith frost?

like you senor lamb, she is a texan living in cold cold chicago, and is featured on local label drag city.

specially check out "cars and parties" on her album wonder wonder. it was one of my favorite 'wallow in melancholy' tracks when it was february and my ass had not gotten all the way warm since the previous september.

for a PUMP IT UP selection, howboutcha talib qweli? anythang talib is guaranteed goodness.

e!

I'd be happy to burn you a CD of mopey 90s indie crap. Or at least "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel.

Everyone's recommending newer stuff (which is all awesome -- Aeroplane, Edith Frost, New Pornographers/Neko Case are things I love)

...so I'm going to recommend a whole mess of old stuff (knowing nothing of what you like):

The Zombies -- Odessey and Oracle (1968)
The Kinks -- Are the Village Green Preservation Society (1968)
Charles Mingus -- The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady (1963)
Television -- Marquee Moon (1977) [or live stuff from 75/76]
Caetano Veloso -- 1st Album (1967/8 )
Siah & Yeshua daPOED -- The Visualz EP (1996)
The Fall -- Slates EP (1981) (or any singles from 1980-1982)
Os Mutantes -- Os Mutantes (1968)
Big Star -- #1 Record (1972)
Yummy Fur -- "Supermarket" b/w "The Career Saver" 7"single (1996)
The Creation -- any compilation of their stuff (1966-68-ish)
MC5 -- Back in the USA (1970) [this one always gets shit-talked, but it's as great as the debut]
The Clefs of Lavender Hill -- "Stop, Get a Ticket" single (1966)
Baby Huey & The Babysitters -- The Baby Huey Story (1970)
The D-Coys -- "Bad Times" single (1966)
Bo Diddley -- pretty much anything he did betw. 1955-1963
Stanley Winston -- "No More Ghettos in America" single (1970)
Velvet Underground & Nico -- early mix (which has just surfaced on the internet thanks to an acetate recently found at a garage sale; early mixes of songs and different versions of songs rerecorded for the album)

I'll copy any of the above for you...

Oooh -- actually, if you like Hip hop but not necessarily boastful radio friendly bling material, check Edan's Beauty & The Beat album that came out earlier this year. Up there with MF Doom's Operation Doomsday and Company Flow's Funcrusher in my opinion.

If you like Journey, you'll love Quebec by Ween. I agree with Ceej, Calexico Burress is a heck of a receiver.

The Vaselines - The Way of the Vaselines
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium
Mudhoney - March to the Fuzz
Screaming Trees - Ocean of Confusion
Elefant - Sunlight Makes Me Paranoid
Death Cab for Cutie - Plans
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl
Blonde Redhead - Misery is a Butterfly

ANYTHING BY CLUTCH!! BEST HARD ROCK BAND EVER, 'CAUSE THEY'RE FROM THE FUTURE!!
