Group Bombino - Guitars From Agadez Vol. 2

^^^This thing is amazing! Another group with that tuareg guitar sound, like Group Inerane or Tinariwen. Side one has the dry/acoustic material (gorgeous) and side two is a live electric full-band set. The whole album is great, but side two is hypnotic and LOUD.

Awesome. I just picked up the Group Inerane album on cd, but was feeling tight enough on cash that I didn't get the Bombino lp. And Oh Graveyard was another recent purchase--how's Fight On, Your Time Ain't Long? Mississippi Records is putting out some really great stuff.

Fight on is more in the vein of the Last Kind Words record, with mostly acoustic blues and all centered around death (ie. "your time ain't long"). It's a great selection, all of it, but the last track on it is so beautiful and beguiling...

I have an eMusic subscription of 65 downloads a month (I sometimes download stuff on the free, but mostly I reserve that for single tracks leaked to the public on purpose, or out of print albums or other things I wouldn't be able to get any other way--see Awesome Tapes From Africa as example number 1; as an artist I like getting paid and think the people I listen to should as well). I always forget to include my download list each month here. So here is January's haul:

I think this is an interesting topic and perhaps should be its own thread. My thoughts on it kind of evolve over the years as the technology and societal views do. I personally work the other way around these days -- I download much music and then purchase what I end up listening to. The channels through which I download music become my method for finding out about new (or old) stuff. That Group Bombino record I mentioned upthread -- I downloaded it last week, fell in love with it, and then purchased it over the weekend. That how its been with most of the stuff I've raved about in this thread over the last few years.

But then why is something like the Awesome Tapes blog an exception? Most of that music is indeed legally purchase-able (see here and here for legal music purchases for two recent posts on the ATFA blog). And I'm not pointing a finger at Shannon with this example -- I often download from that site and sites like it as well. The Mississippi records releases both Shannon and I are so fond of... I'm not sure of their royalty structure for some of the music. Do they track down the artists on the compilations and pay them accordingly? I don't believe they do (though they did officially license the Bongo Joe record from Arhoolie). They only press 1000 records, so is it negligible? Are those royalties for 1000 songs that someone is now owed, or are 1000 new people now exposed to someone's music (that will go an explore further)? I love that Irma Thomas record they put out -- as a matter of fact, it's that record that exposed me to her now -- but I don't think they are sending her a check... ...but i'm now tracking down more of her stuff.

All this downloading music / RIAA suing / artists royalties / "home taping is killing music" (anyone remember that phrase?) stuff is so interesting to me. I don't think its been discussed on here before and wonder what other people think. Do other people here download music, legally or otherwise? Do you buy it after listening to it? Is it helping or hurting artists?

btw: that Kurt Vile record is great!

there's no way i could afford all of the music I want to listen to. Very rarely do I buy a physical album. If I do, its usually because its a cheap deal at the band's show, or because its something i couldn't find anywhere to DL.

So, yes, I torrent music. I don't really feel guilty about it. If I didn't, the band still wouldn't have my money but I wouldn't know how sweet they are. When I do DL something, I usually gab it up and spread the word. So, they aren't losing out entirely.

How I got into this album is sort of wrapped up in the download discussion thread, but I just want to say I concur. Listened to it three times today. Freeway is just a perfect perfect song and a great way to open an album. If someone could write a TV show that could earn that song's use as a theme song, well, that would be a hella good TV show.
