Haven't seen anyone saying Palin won the debate, but have heard plenty saying how good she did. I didn't think she did that well, but she wasn't nearly as horrible as she could've been. And really, that's why people were impressed by her. She set the bar so low that she didn't have to work that hard to look good.
I loved Biden finally calling out the maverick bullshit. Also, I loved it when Palin would cite some vote Obama made as a negative and then Biden would follow up by saying she forgot to mention McCain voted the same way on the bill. You'd think she'd learn, but he did that at least three times, if I remember correctly.

It was definitely the best debate I've seen in awhile though.

I wish that were the case. My concern is that there were Republicans who thought Palin was scary and it was making them hesitate on voting McCain. And now she looks less scary and they may not hesitate now. I even think she looks less scary and after that trainwreck Couric interview, that is quite a jump for me.shando wrote:Basically I thought Palin stopped the bleeding. But in the end, that won't be enough. While she helped her own tarnished reputation, I thought Biden was much more effective helping his ticket. And in the end, that's the only metric that matters.
She actually did amazingly well. And while she staying on certain talking points a lot, she also attacked other questions pretty head on.
No one is stating a win one way or another, but the Republicans can now say this is why we hired her and have some bragging rights now.
She didn't answer hardly any of the questions! She only answered questions she liked, and was blatant about changing the subject away from topics she knew little to nothing about.Asaf wrote: She actually did amazingly well. IF the bar was simply that she not fall flat on her face, then that's a shame. The bar should be set high in a VP debate, regardless of how poorly a few interviews prior make one look. I will give her credit on technique. She has reasonable good debate technique. Overall though, I thought that Biden did a much better job of answering the questions with thoughtful knowledgeable responses, and was an absolute gentleman throughout. He never shifted an answer away from a question once. In fact he was focused like a lazer beam.

Strong faith that she won't be nearly as bad as she can be, and the fact that she managed not to say anything incredibly stupid, while being decisive about other items even if they're wrong. That's good enough for some.nadine wrote:Biden did really well, I don't understand how Palin has charmed so many people.
This looks most like Palin's debate and general talking style to me:

yeah, i thought Biden killed. some slight stammering, but he had far more substance and when he hit his groove he was throwing some really nice rhetorical haymakers. her bs "i'm not going to answer the questions the way you want me to" line pretty much set the tone of the evening for her...ie: "i'm not going to answer the questions beyond the pre-memorized talking points we worked on at debate camp."
it's disconcerting that the level of success for her has been lowered to "hey, she didn't swallow her own tongue on live TV! WE WIN!"
and why do all these pseudo folksy theocrats like Bush and Palin not know how to say nuclear? also, if i have to hear the word "maverick" used one more damn time, i'm going to beat someone to death over the head with a copy of the Mel Gibson movie.

One of my favorite moments from the Republican Convention was when McCain was talking about education and the camera cut to a guy in the audience with a sign that misspelled the word maverick. I thought that was particularly good.the_reverend wrote:and why do all these pseudo folksy theocrats like Bush and Palin not know how to say nuclear? also, if i have to hear the word "maverick" used one more damn time, i'm going to beat someone to death over the head with a copy of the Mel Gibson movie.
I missed the debate but am just now sitting down to watch it on-line (been having some internet issues lately).
looks like I will be on a plane on Tuesday...let's plan for the last one. Looking forward to it.arthursimone wrote:Sure, we can throw together a debate watchin' party for the 2nd or 3rd Obama/McCain one...Miggy wrote:P.S. I'm occupado this Thursday and will be watching the recaps on-line - but Arthur - if you're watching either of the other debates and would like company - I'd love to watch it with a fellow politico. I don't have a TV so I have to go out to bars to watch these sort of media events and it's always a toss up on the crowd or if they'll have the sound on.

can my shot word just be McCain's forced smile that proves he's a Cylon and murders joy in the world everytime he does it and leaves the soul shrieking? it's such a chilling sight, i'm going to need to drink when he does it anyway so this'll just save me some time...
