whj Memorial Scholarship is Back

Post by beardedlamb »

Innovators,
The whj Memorial Scholarship is back for its third year. Our past two winners, Jeff Britt and Kaci Beeler have enjoyed an ALL SHOWS Pass and a Full-ride scholarship to the workshops of their choice. Now, you can live the dream, too.

Don't let your art stagnate and don't not get this great free stuff!

THE RULES
The Scholarship will go to the person who can submit the best new idea for an improv format. Submissions will be taken in any and all forms; on CD, as a Word document, performed on tape, etc. There are no guidelines for how you submit or what you submit. It's free and it's all about getting the wheels of invention turning. Please include your email address and name somewhere on the thing so we know who you are.

Entries are due August 9th.
Please email your entry or any questions you might have to the festival producers at producers A T outofboundsimprov D OT co m
Or if physical mail is necessary, see the site here.

Oob staff members will go over the entries and announce a winner via email on August 15th.

Can you share with us the contents of the previous winners? I'm not sure what would constitute a new improv format.

If you check out the link Jeremy posted, you can read about both of the previous winning formats.

do you have to be currently living in Austin to submit? and is there any kind of rule against former producers (or current producers of sister festivals) submitting?

And this year's scholarship winner is quite (un)ironically a member of the former well hung jury; Mr. Jordan T. Maxwell.

Our American Cousin: The Show Must Go On
By Jordan T. Maxwell

They say that the equation for comedy is tragedy plus time. Well, one of the deepest and grandest tragedies this country has faced in its history was the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre during a performance of Our American Cousin. That was over a hundred years ago. The comedy equation is waiting to be solved.

The basic idea would be to find a copy of the script for Our American Cousin and perform the first act (or a cutting) as a fully rehearsed and polished version of the play with costumes, props, sets, the whole shebang. Only when the lights go down, we hear a gunshot in the audience and someone shouting “Sic semper tyrannis!â€

Was this rigged or did everyone else submit party quirks?
They call me Dollar Bill 'cause I always make sense.

to add a little context, i first came up with the idea while standing in line for Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland after having only gotten about an hour of sleep the night before. so the moral here is to minorly damage your brain and then go to a theme park to come up with good improv formats!

(and Bill, if it makes you feel any better, i submitted two format ideas...so while i may have beaten others, i also beat myself. wait, that sounds wrong...or does it?)
