Antiviruses

Post by spantell »

Anyone have a recommendation for antivirus software? I hear that some (like Norton, which I used to have) can really slow your system down.

I use Kaspersky anti-virus. It's free and it's worked pretty well so far. I haven't noticed any system slowdown after install.

I work at an IT place. They recommend AVG and Symantec. And AdAware for spies.

I feel like the quality of AVG has decreased a lot over the last year or so.

You may be right actually. I only use a windows box at work and I use AVG there. But I use mostly macs so I wouldn't have known if it went down hill.

I use Bitdefender and Spy-bot Search and Destroy, they do the trick pretty nicely. For those time when you actually do get infected Malwarebytes is a solid program to help you out

As one guy put it, common sense is the best antivirus: don't go to untrustworthy sites, disable javascript unless you really need it, don't press "Yes" or "Agree" to any unexpected downloads, and so on.

I never used antivirus software, and I've had one of my computers running for seven years before switching to a new one, and it still works.

This all happened because a spambot bumped the thread and Quinn replied to it. If you'll notice, the question is from 3 years ago.
