Pearls Before Swine Fest, this Friday and Saturday

Post by Roy Janik »

Okay, so maybe I just invented that festival just now. But this way, next year we can claim it as the 2nd annual! Also, that'll be the year that the hideout gets stormed by bikers and we all die. FUN!

As Chris Allen already pointed out, it's going to be hard to get an audience this weekend. I think we actually went dark last year, but this time we're soldiering on.

Don't let bikers destroy improv, like they destroyed the hippie era.

Also, you can't tell, really, but that photo is taken from just outside the Hideout at last year's rally. You can just make out the Roaring Fork sign.

Feel free to spread this image around.

Also, that dude's shirt says "Get Naked." Classy.

Fun fact--it's rumored that George Lucas was actually the cameraman who captured the famous events on film. I'm surprised he hasn't digitally altered it by now.

Another fun fact-- I met filmmaker Albert Maysles-- who made Gimme Shelter, the documentary about the events above-- one night on a train headed to Chicago, and I had an extensive conversation with him there about movies. It was kind of totally awesome.

This, Roy, is a thing of beauty. Just got a little tear in my eye...

Thanks!

I will be sure to wear pearls to the show and cause a swine riot.

Seriously, those bikers mean business:

A parade and a concert right outside the hideout, pretty much exactly when our shows are.

Over 200,000 people pack the downtown streets of Austin during Friday Night of the ROT Rally to party biker style. This is the largest biker party you will ever see in the downtown district of any city and it simply cannot be missed! We'll party in style in plain view of the capitol and 6th Street. Congress Avenue will literally be shut down for biker parking only. The Rally Committee is pleased to present a FREE concert featuring headliner bands that will surely be a highlight of the 2008 ROT Rally.
And that headlining band is named Molly Hatchet.

And not in a good way.

It looks like Ka-Baam and Maestro might be as screwed as well (again, not in a good way) with the gay pride parade happening exactly at the same time as Ka-Baam and the biker rally still in full swing. The bikers shouldn't be as much of a presence in that area of Congress and north of it as they are on side streets.

I think that Saturday will be OK. The Pride parade seems to end at 4t and congress and loop back up south 1st.

The bikers, I think, will be all over congress for the concert that's happening.

What about offering a "one night only" discount. Well, it might be too late to get the word out. Just thinking out loud.

We've thrown in the towel for Friday night. No shows tonight. If you're in one of the troupes performing and you haven't heard from your contact dude/dudette, consider this your notice, and make sure your troupemates know.

BUT Saturday we will be back in full effect. Bikers, you may have won the battle, but you ain't won the war!
