Manuel's is largely regarded as having excellent Mole. I certainly liked it, but I like everything.

I love food.

I love me some Home Slice Pizza.
And I will kill a man for a burger from Casino el Camino.
Fugo de Chao should be experienced, but it's definitely pricey.
I know lots of people who love The Melting Pot, but I can't stand it, particularly for the price.
Meat pies from Boomerangs have been a favorite of mine for a while.
The Woodlands, on Congress, is damn tasty, as is the South Congress Cafe.

Lots of good food around.

You work your life away and what do they give?
You're only killing yourself to live

Here are the things I miss most, food-wise:

French fries at Hyde Park B&G
Pan-fried noodles from Wan Fu
Salsa.
Gingerbread pancakes at The Omelettry
Pluckers!
Burgers and rings at Players, especially after a Well Hung Jury show.
Anything from Moonshine
Mexican martinis and off-the-menu fried mushrooms at Trudy's.
Mexican breakfast at La Feria.
The gigantic, no fuckin' around ribs at Artz Rib House.

There you go.
"Oh, shit. We're being pulled over."
"Is it us?"
"No, it's someone else, and he's pulling us over to tell us who it is, like a courtesy"

Things you must have if food-wise in Austin.

An Amarillo burger from Casino el Camino (say Hut's hamburgers are better and we are not on speaking terms for quite some time)
The bulgogi burger with the works (sauteed mushrooms and onions with pepper jack cheese) at Burger Tex.
The P-15, Kao Soi, or F7, Lard Na, at Madam Mam's Westgate location. Just discovered the P-15 and it's fricking amazing. Their Tom Kha or Tom Yum is also damn good.
The stuffed avocado with suiza sauce at Trudy's. It's heart-stoppingly good. And, yes, don't forget the Mexican Martini.
A michelada from El Chile Cafe y Cantina (or just El Chile's) on Manor. The mole's good too, but I mainly like the michelada.
Singer’s pizza at The Parlor on Guadalupe. My new favorite pizza in Austin.
A trip to the Palace Buffet.
Save up some money for a full omakase dinner at Uchi's. Or just see if they're serving the PB & J foie gras that night. Sounds like a confusing dish, but it's amazing.
Oysters at Quality Seafood.
A Guinness shake at the Alamo. The trick is to order it with half vanilla and half chocolate ice cream. It's hard for me to resist ordering that any time I go there.
The antipasto misto from Mandola's. This is one of the best inexpensive meals you'll ever eat, and it usually feeds two for dinner.
Try the stuffed poblano at Kerbey Lane's. It's vegetarian friendly to boot.
Oh, and I know it's not a purely Austin restaurant (even though it's close), but I love the Pineapple Fried Rice at Firebowl Cafe.

As my troupe is fond of reminding me, I like food. Like . . . a lot.

Kareem and I are clearly one person. Other dishes/eateries he forgot to mention:

-The mole at Curras is solid. And Evita's Bonatitas on South South First.
-Arandas on South First just south of Olthorf has the best salsa in town.
-The fish or shrimp ala plancha (and pretty much anything else) at Polvos
-Best Wurst on Sixth Street
-The Burger at Sullivan's is fantastic and half price on Monday nights in the bar. Go nuts and get the blue cheese saturated chips as well.
-The brownie (warmed up) with Amy's ice cream at the Hideout is actually one of my favorite deserts in town.
-The freshly baked cookies at the Alamo Draft House, again with Amy's ice cream.
-The Spicy African Peanut Soup at Austin Java.

I was thinking about this thread last night as I was finishing work at about 10pm. Most restaurants in this town close at 10, so I am especially interested in favorite places open late.

My list:

Tartines at Blue Dahlia. Very healthy, wholesome and inexpensive
Ruby's barbecue. Hand-raised hormone-free beef. I love the brisket and ribs. And open until 11-12pm (varies)
Sam's barbecue is an adventure, and they're open until 3am, at least on weekends... good folks.
wink has it down for high-end. Check their friday bar happy hour specials, like $6 mini-burgers that are on par with the rest of their menu.
I'll second Jo's for best burger in town. There are a lot of good burgers here, and I keep going back to Jo's, BurgerTex, and Dirty's (when you gotta have grease)

Ethnic foods:
Korea House for authentic Korean bbq (skip their sushi)
Almost any Vietnamese place, esp Pho Saigon in chinatown center or Hai Ky on Oltorf
Shalimar on N Lamar for South Asian (Indian/Pakistani/Bengali)

I love food so much...

Mexican-
Fonda San Miguel - Expensive but sooooo delicious, and maybe the best mole (s) in town.
El Caribe - Home of the pollito relleno - A chicken breast pounded flat, smeared with chorizo, rolled up, battered, deep-fried, and covered with cheese sauce. It's about the size of your fist(and your heart).
Manuel's - they use real cheese in their dishes and do indeed have a good mole or two.
Elsi's Restaurant - Technically Salvadoran, but tasty. Decent bar drinks.

Comfort-
Hoover's - Just go. Seriously. Just..go. Down home delicious and huge portions.
Victory Grill - fried seafood and homemade desserts
Quality Seafood - The best fried sea creatures I've found in Austin. They are also a fish market, so everything they cook is super-fresh. Try the sea leg salad as a side.
Hide Park Bar and Grill - Yes to the fries, Pimento Cheese Sandwich, and the miraculously tasty Wong Kim's Peach Pudding.
Player's - good burgers. Sit down and order a large milkshake.
Dirty Martin's Kumback Place - great burgers.

Asian-
Din Ho - My dad calls it The Hanging Duck. I like the sizzling dishes, or the Fresh and Dried Salt and Pepper Calimari. They have over 100 things on the menu.
Tien Hong - Consistently excellent chinese food cooked by people who love what they do. Also good for Dim Sum on the weekends. They have funky drinks. Order a Dr. Skull or The Flaming Volcano(don't drink this by yourself).
Madam Mam's - My pick for the best Thai food in town. Every dish is fantastic. The Pad Cha Catfish is sometimes so hot, I can't finish it. Order anything that starts with 'Amazing'.
The Oriental Market with a Cafe in the Back of the Store - It's on the corner of McNeil and 183. Maybe the best Chinese in town. Just pick some things if you can't find an english menu or an english speaker.
Veggie Heaven - All vegetarian. Really good stuff near UT. It's run by the Falun Gong!
Ichiban - Good sushi. They have booths that require the removal of your shoes.
Korea House - Lunch box B! You can also cook your own Bulgogi at the table. Look for the vent hoods.

Indian -
Madras Pavilion - Everything is vegetarian. Don't be afraid. Excellent food. Bring a friend and order a dinner for 2.
Sarovar - Depends on the day, but a good buffet place.

BBQ -
Rudy's - Sounds crazy, but they've got the best brisket I've tasted in town. And I've tasted a lot.
Drive to Lockhart - It's not that far away and has really good barbecue places. Google is your friend here. It's a beautiful town and a great day trip. It's also where they filmed Waiting for Guffman.
Iron Works - it's downtown and usually has good brisket.
The Pit - There used to be more of these around town. Consistently good food.

Fancy -
Jeffrey's Restaurant - Worth the money. Excellent service. Great deals at happy hour for appetizer's and drinks. The bartender usually has a heavy hand on the pour.
Aquarelle - French heaven.

That's all for now. If you're craving a specific genre or dish, ping me.

Hey Cameraman--

How come you ain't never taken us to none of them places to eat? Well I think we went to Hyde Park a long time ago but if I recall the eggs in my benedict was cold and rubbery and we didn't get no fries. I think you owe us some kind of fancy dinner or somethin for all the fame and attention we helped swing your way.

I just had a pizza from The Little Deli in the Crestview neighborhood. It was amazing. Probably the best pizza I've had in Austin.

Fortunately, I read this thread after lunch! A few of my faves not yet mentioned:

I'm all in for the bronzed catfish at Threadgill's.
Swad on north Lamar near Rutland for vegetarian Indian food. A little pricey, and the dining room is an afterthought, but great eats.
Titaya's on north Lamar near Koenig has great pad praram.

My secret weapon for finding new places to go is The Fearless Critic web site (http://www.fearlesscritic.com/). You get the benefit of their rankings and being able to search by neighborhood without having to pay to read their reviews.

Happy Hour: 219 West--half off apps and dollar off specialty martinis. Seafood Beignets, Cheese Fries, Mini Caprese Burgers

Agreed: Quality Seafood = quality everything. Mussels and oysters. Delish.

Breakfast taco: Juan-in-a-Million. $2.44, but big enough to be two tacos.

Fino: Delicious Spanish food. Great Monday happy hour.

Sandwich: Foodheads on 34th

Brunch: Z-Tejas, Zocalo, Taverna

Fancy Fish: Perla's on Congress.

I'm pretty broke, so I don't go out and eat much. But I've been hitting up La Mexicana Bakery on S First for breakfast tacos. They're about a dollar apiece, and awesomely tasty. I suggest the chorizo con huevos y frijoles. Yummmmm

tony, the owner makes all of his dough there. thin, crispy but not too crunchy. plus you can order your pie and then run over to my grocery store and grab a sixer to wash it down.
