I'd like to apply for tech journalism jobs in the San Francisco area but how do you set up an interview with employers thousands of miles away? Is it done by phone? What?

depends. sometimes you get one interview over the phone. sometimes you get 2 interviews: one pver the phone aand then if they like you one more intverview in person in which they fly you out. everyone i know that's gotten an out of state job has fallen into one of these two categories.
