What a great night.
All 3 teams delivered so many high points, it was ridiculous.
Every team desrved to advance.

Everyone put up outstanding work.

I laughed my ass off.

As specific as that is, I still feel only partially informed. Where do the points come from? What do they mean?

The audience votes at the end. Each audience member votes for only one team as their favorite. The team with the most points advances. There is still a chance for the runner-up to advance in the wildcard slot.
