Thanks, Shannon! I do own Fear of music. I do love Talking Heads!shando wrote:Chris--the Pere Ubu is really good. It's from 1979, so it might have been one of the ones you listened to in college. Not like it's a new album or anything. There are some great trax on there--Navvy, Drinking Wine Spodyody, Dub Housing, I Will Wait, and maybe best of all, Ubu Dance Party. Fuck it, every song is good. Blow Daddy-O, all good. They should have been as popular as Talking Heads. This album came out the same year as TH's Fear Of Music, by the way, and they have similar feels. To get a taste, I stuck Navvy on my blog, here.
Marc, I agree, the Ethiopiques series is awesome. I have Volumes 1,2, 3, 6, and 18. What do you have?
C'mon people, the UCB thread is trying to break the record it took us years to build in a matter of days. What tunes are you listening to right now?
Edited to say--19!
OK, I should also say I understand why Pere Ubu weren't as popular as Talking Heads, so if you go to Dub Housing expecting "Burning Down the House" you will be disappointed. But in the way that Fear of Music can be creepy ("Air can hurt you, too"), Dub Housing is as well.HerrHerr wrote:Thanks, Shannon! I do own Fear of music. Thanks for the link man! I haven't heard many of those bands they mention, but Los Llamarada's records are insane. That 7" he mentions (the a-side, at least) is great. There's some samples at S-S Records' site: http://207.228.243.82/ss/cat.htmlshando wrote:http://dustedmagazine.com/features/667

Ah, I don't have Volume 21. Now I gotta get that one. Between the Ethiopiques Series and the Smithsonian Folkways series of Music From Indonesia, I will never have time for any other music.mcnichol wrote:Thanks for the link man! ALSO -- Shannon -- I found Ethiopiques 21 and was listening to that at work yesterday after seeing that on your list. Holy Crap! that is some of the most gorgeous, infectious, but uncategorizable piano I have ever heard. I'd expected the whole serious to be more group-oriented, funky but this took me by surprise completely.
