Lisa...If you're looking for a good entry into Afro-Pop, I'd recommend Orchestra BaoBab which is pan-african but based in Sengal and Fela Kuti who's already been talked about a bunch. I also like Amadou et Mariam They're a blind couple with really fascinating polyrhythms and touching vocals from Mali.

While I like all of their work, in particular I enjoy the three discs below:

I know you guys are into lists and recommendations and stuff, because, well, that's what this thread is.

Every Friday I try to go check out Dusted Magazine, which has a weekly feature called Listed, wherein they get two bands to list their favorite stuff. One of this weeks contributors is the wooden Shijps, recently much talked about in this thread. Go see what those dudes like.

OK, I should also say I understand why Pere Ubu weren't as popular as Talking Heads, so if you go to Dub Housing expecting "Burning Down the House" you will be disappointed. But in the way that Fear of Music can be creepy ("Air can hurt you, too"), Dub Housing is as well.

ALSO -- Shannon -- I found Ethiopiques 21 and was listening to that at work yesterday after seeing that on your list. Holy Crap! that is some of the most gorgeous, infectious, but uncategorizable piano I have ever heard. I'd expected the whole serious to be more group-oriented, funky but this took me by surprise completely.

Ah, I don't have Volume 21. Now I gotta get that one. Between the Ethiopiques Series and the Smithsonian Folkways series of Music From Indonesia, I will never have time for any other music.
