federer: improviser?

Post by ratliff »

A highly speculative analysis of Roger Federer's approach that may or may not be relevant to improv:

http://tennisworld.typepad.com/tenniswo ... nd-th.html

"It's all in the mind and it's all in the moment."

My teacher Shad Kunkle told us that the best book he'd ever read on improv was Tim Gallwey's The Inner Game of Tennis. "Just substitute 'improv' for 'tennis' and it all applies."

Twenty bonus points to anyone who manages to post before Bill Stern.

Gallway's Inner Game books are fantastic and apply to Improv in the way that everything zen applies to improv.

Yay, bonus points! I've heard good things about that tennis book, too. I suppose it's worth looking into.

My sophomore year acting professor had us read "Zen in the Art of Archery" by Eugen Herrigel and give us a similar "replace 'archery' with 'acting'" objective. I should dig it out again sometime....

The difference is, in competitive tennis, you're trying to win.

Vamos, Rafa!
They call me Dollar Bill 'cause I always make sense.

Bill, are you really "trying" to win, or are you just winning?

I got the same memo from Shad, bought the book, replaced the word, and it worked! Shad good.

I thought this was a post about Kevin Federline. Which would make one wonder why I opened it. Maybe I feel sorry for the guy since Britney's been stealing the spotlight lately. Poor Kevin. Woe is Kevin. Hmmm, maybe I should make a YouTube where I cry for Kevin in front of a sheet with lots of eye makeup on.

Kevin Federline:

Said "Yes and . . . "
Made his scene partner look good (by comparison)
Tried to do things he didn't know whether he could pull off (rapping, fatherhood)
Committed, briefly

K-Fed's an improviser too!

Okay this is humorous 1) because it's oxymoronic, in an a posteriori sort of way, and 2) because wasn't he an underwear model?
