Ultimate Improv?

Post by Rev. Jordan T. Maxwell »

hey, I just got into my first improv troupe out here in L.A. (excluding the two man troupe Jeff and I are putting together, but with our schedules I imagine i'll probably wind up performing with these guys first). pretty exciting. after one game of "Yesand" during the audition, the director basically got up and said that we had just done EXACTLY what they were looking for. which was a nice feeling. 8)

the troupe is called Ultimate Improv and the director is JD Walsh. is anyone familiar with them or their work? just want to try and get my bearings prior to the first rehearsal.

hehe...i've also got a part in a ten minute musical called "The Alleged Adventures of Blenderman." i gots me a solo and everything. i also heard back from a short film i auditioned for and got a small part as "Soldier." not a lot of screen time, but it's a break from my usual comedic character roles on film so makes for some nice diversity on a reel. basically, i get to be a badass and point guns and shout at people, channeling my inner Jack Bauer (Bill, i miss our 24 chats!). and i've heard from two other shorts in the last week or so who want me to come in and audition. one of them might actually even pay! :D

i had another audition for a show, but haven't heard back from them yet beyond "come see the show and decide if it's a good fit for you!" except i couldn't go because of another audition. but the audition itself was a lot of fun. they had a side to read, but the guy told me to put it aside and asked if i'd ever done any improv. i was tempted to be a smart ass and say "i've dabbled," but i came clean and admitted i'd been doing it since high school. so he gave me the premise that i had to tell someone that i wanted to sleep with that i had crabs, but still wanted to sleep with them. I did the usual hemming and hawing through the awkwardness of breaking bad news and then tripped on this little gem:

"Okay, did you ever watch the Smurfs as a kid? Yeah, the little blue guys, lived in mushrooms, white hats. Kind of high pitched voices. Annoying, but you learn how to live with them? Okay...so...basically, I have a Smurf village...living in my pubic hair."

the guy seemed to dig it, but like i said, i have yet to hear anything. However, i'm tempted to develop that speech into a monologue and audition with in the future. :P

I looked at the website. So which troupe did you get in, anyhow? The Ultimate Ensemble? or one of the other ones?

yeah, Ultimate Ensemble. it's sort of their "entry level" troupe and they farm some of their talent for the more "advanced" troupes out of there. they've also invited us to participate in their X-Ecution show which they do ever week. it's sort of a highly extended Maestro as far as i can tell that takes place over several weeks and the directors are actually judges who then give you critiques over the course of the shows and in an American Idol style the final winner gets $100 and a spot in a "main stage" show. which is kind of cool.

but for now, i'm just focused on listening, learning, eventually performing with them...and farming talent myself for my pulp hero troupe.
