IMHO, this doens't seem like something the AIC needs to debate too much. It seems like a venue decision, especially if it is free. I bring it up because it was posted in the AIC General Discussion thread and it seems to be a decent idea getting over analyzed (which, usually I don't mind, but again, I don't see this as needing to be a community decision).

The idea is proposed. If a venue wants to provide free time and space, I say let them. After all, even if the "AIC" decides this is a great idea, unless a venue backs it with space, it doesn't matter.

The AIC gets no financial kickback and should probably pull back on trying to insinuate itself into yet another production role, especially if many of the proposed players at this point are coming from either theater's classes or the Hideout's Jam, none of which are AIC-sponsored activities. If a theater wants to say "Sunday night at 8 are free student show nights" then I say more power to 'em.

I think this is a great idea, one we've floated before, and one of good timing. I'd just philosophically distance it from the AIC (still promote the AIC as we do with other non-AIC shows) and let a venue take the ownership of it on themselves.

I disagree. I think it's shows like this that the AIC was made for... that is, promoting improv in austin, and helping newer improvisers develop as performers.

If it's associated with a particular venue and not the AIC, then it's more likely to be perceived as being geared towards the students and graduates of the classes that take place at that theater. In fact, if the show is monthly, I wouldn't even be opposed to it alternating venues so as to make that point even clearer.

Advice Dave Buchman gave to his last level 4 class - was to not worry too much about forming the perfect troup - but to just get on stage an play. The more time you spend on stage the better you get. Roy's idea would be a perfect and low pressure opportunity for new improvisers to perform several times as a graduating class and for new improvisers who don't yet want to commit to being in a troup to peform together in a non-jam/non-maestro setting. Here people can really explore in more depth who they play best with, what formats they like doing, etc. I think this would be a real benifit to new improvisers and to the improv community at-large.

It may be cool do it after maestro on the first saturday of every month or something like that (if not more frequently). If it is free - basically if you paid for maestro you could stick around for the next show. Or we could do a pay 7 bucks for maestro and 10 for both shows.

I totally agree with your description of why a lab show would be good thing, but I think the shows should just be good ol' fashioned free. It might not be very shrewd to encourage people to pay less for Maestro.

We used to do an open jam after micetro. It suffered from lack of audience. I think a show in an early time slot, promoted well, would better serve this purpose.

It should be 100% free, too.

Y'all know better than I do regarding the time slot and whether people would show up for a jam type show. People may come to a free show if marketed right.

My reasoning for suggesting making it post-maestro was to build on an audience that was already in the theater. By making the cost of a seat marginal) it might give people an incentive to stay (well heck i already paid for it) instead of leaving right after maestro.

This said, if it is free it might be better to keep people there since many haven't seen improv before.

That's what we thought, too. But it turns out that people who've just seen an hour and change of improv have had enough for one night, for the most part.
