any chance you're heading to LA or NYC anytime soon?

in either of those cities there's a glut of great photographers and the prices are significantly lower than they would be here for the same 2-3 headshot-takers that all other actors around here use. A weekend visit to either coast would probably justify the travel cost.

Kenny Gall is amazing. You get 4 looks, you spend the whole afternoon with him, he shoots a ton of photos, you help him pick the one for each look you want, you sit there while he edits them to your satisfaction and you walk out with a proof of each shot. Totally amazing and worth the $295 he charges.

Does he own the "negatives", or do you?

A lot of headshot photogs make you go through them to get prints, and your photo will have their copyright on it (preventing you from getting them copied easily at Kinkos)

You work your life away and what do they give?

Nope, you own them. You get a disc of every photo he takes during the process. I've just made my prints at HEB myself. He puts his name small on the side of the frame (not on the photo itself, so it's more like advertising), but it's not a copywrite notice over the image. He's a straight shooter and a friend of the Austin arts community. He's done my headshots and Joplin's and bunch of other folks.

I really could use a headshot for columns I write, but not a $300 headshot!

$125, and I could see it...

Are you sure you don't want the dirty mechanic look?

(how dare they change the location of the Andy mechanic portrait.)
