Need day ideas
I am spending the day with my friend Paul who is visiting from NYC and tomorrow is the last day. Want to find fun things to do outside of the usual. If you have any ideas please share them here.
Also, remember I have no car.
And if you have the day off and a car, feel free to hang with us. I will pay for you.

Or you could tour the capital building....I hear good things about that.
You boys have fun whatever you do

The Harry Ransom Center at UT is one of the world's great literary archives. They just bought David Mamet's personal papers, adding to a collection that includes, just off the top of my head, Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh, Tom Stoppard, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Woodward and Bernstein's Watergate papers, and a ton of other stuff. They have a gallery on the ground floor where they have changing exhibitions, as well as a Gutenberg Bible and the world's first photograph.

Let me know if you guys go to the Blanton. I haven't been there yet and I'd like to go with some random dude. I'll bring the rollerskates.
Wouldn't it be cool if museums were open 24 hours?
Oh, and concerning the MAMET:

WE WILL BE PERFORMING MAMET IN FRONT OF AND FOR THE CRITICAL EYE OF MR. MAMET HIMSELF. Fuckin Hell. Next stop, off-off-broadway.From the article:
In support of the archive, Mamet has agreed to contribute to the intellectual life of The University of Texas at Austin by joining the university community in a series of short residencies for four years.
"I look forward to interactions with students and otherwise interested people at the university in the coming years, as A) I love to teach, and B) anybody who is interested in my work is 'okay with me,'" said Mamet.

also on/near the UT campus is the Bob Bullock museum and IMAX theatre, the Blanton Art museum, and the statue of the guy holding his sword but from the right angle it looks like he is holding his erect penis (thanks Jill for sharing that with me - feel free to give more details)

It's a fantastic museum, but they're in the middle of remodeling the downstairs wing to prepare for the building's first birthday party. Things will really get rolling on Friday.kaci_beeler wrote:The Blanton Museum of Art is supposed to be excellent (not outside but only open during the day time).
If you like art museums, the upstairs section is still home to over half the collection and well worth the price of admission. I'd pick it over the Bob Bullock and HRC any day. I don't know what's at the LBJ, but that's over on campus too, just a bit north of our football stadium.
If you want a good view of the city, you can acquire tickets for a tower tour, I think.

I actually dislike the Blanton. Eventually, when they have the money for loaned works and more exhibitions, it'll be nice, but for now the permanent collection bores my tongue out.
so, my recommendation:

Want proof that Arthur's tongue actually came out? It is on display at the Blanton right now. It is a found object piece that is getting rave reviews. Not exactly a sculpture...not exactly a drawing...notexactly a painting...but certainly challenges notions of what a work of art can be! Check it...arthursimone wrote:... but for now the permanent collection bores my tongue out.
