What is meant these days by "Heroes of Comedy?"

Post by Mo Daviau »

I'd like to be provided a straight answer as to what is meant by "Heroes of Comedy" these days, when the paradigm has shifted from house team to multiple independent team cooperative. Do we mean:

1) The Historic Heroes of Comedy, né We Could Be Heroes?
2) Persons who completed all three levels of Heroes classes who were invited to join the Heroes?
3) The name by which shows that make 100% of their money for Sean/The Hideout go under?
4) A combination of the above, as dictated by Andy?

I hear the name get bandied about now and again, but I'm not so sure of what it means anymore. When I joined 3 years ago, it still had a clear meaning. As far as I'm concerned, I am still a member of The Heroes, if it still exists. But as a member, I'd like clarification of my duties.

Mo, your duties are to wait patiently, blending in to your work and social environments, until you are called upon to perform a task of an undetermined nature. You will not have information on the whereabouts or identities of other "Heroes of Comedy" for reasons of security and plausible deniability.

Okay. My feelings about it at this point are as follows:

The Heroes are primarily a production company. They handle Maestro, Start Trekkin' and any other show where the profits primarily go the Hideout. They also manage the Heroes School of Improv. So anyone that goes through the classes or participates in a Heroes show is loosely labeled a Hero of Comedy.

I'm thinking that this is becoming an outdated model, and that for the sake of uniformity and simplicity of money issues and space rental issues we might just move all shows under the umbrella of Austin Improv. Sean has always been excited about the idea of getting a permanent renter for the downstairs; well, Austin Improv is positioning itself to be a permanent renter for the upstairs weekends. What if, at some point in the near future, instead of lots of little calculations for every show, Austin Improv paid $700 each week for exclusive use of the upstairs space on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Or a larger ammount for the entire week (in which we could rent out space to troupes for rehearsals, etc.).

We should talk about this at the meeting on Sunday.

I appreciate you asking this Mo.
I've been really curious.

Andy - I appreciate both your comic and actual answer.
I am impressed with the way you have opened your arms, mind,
space and friendship to new people - ideas, perspectives - etc. etc.

Your willingess and openess has been one of the biggest reasons
all this growing has been possible. I've told that you before - but I wanted to write
it out loud.

Do you remember the day Dave and I walked into the Hideout, met you and then stalked you?
I do.

Thanks for being you.

R.
