ColdTowne Conservatory Masters Classes #4: Jesse Parent

Post by ChrisTrew.Com »

Coming the first weekend in February!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Jesse Parent began improvising in 1992. Since that
time he's trained with such improv greats as Mick
Napier, Charna Halpern, Joe Bill, Armando Diaz, Dave
Razowsky, and Todd Stashwick. He has performed in
over 25 national and international festivals, mostly
as the second half of the duo JoKyR and Jesster. He
teaches in Utah and abroad and has developed the slam
poetry fueled format, the Hook, which he has performed
in Phoenix, Denver, and New York City.

WORKSHOPS:
Saturday morning: 10-12

GOOD META: BASHING DOWN THE FOURTH WALL
Everything you do on stage and in life is food for a
scene. Use the whole buffalo. This workshop will help
you recognize that you are constantly generating
material for scenework, and how to tear down the
fourth wall and use it all... scenically, not cheaply.

Class is limited to 15 students.
$20
-----

Saturday afternoon: 1-6

THE HOOK: INTENSIVE
Find your inner poet and use it to take that
suggestion in new directions. The Hook is an improv
form that combines slam poetry, musical soundscapes,
and ensemble improv to make improv that looks like a
poem. This format is now being performed by groups in
Boston, San Francisco, and Salt Lake City. At its
heart is a source provided by improvised slam poetry
with an a capella musical backdrop. Learn how to find
your poetic voice, leverage patterns, and have fun
while doing it.

There will be a recital for all students taking this
class at 7PM on the day of the class.

Class is limited to 9 students.
$50

This weekend? I don't see any dates listed.

But regular Coldtowne classes will still be meeting, right?

If so, sign me up for the Fourth Wall. If not, sign me up for both.

Jesse Parent is one of the coolest improvisers on the planet - as anyone who met him at OoB should know.

Also, it would be great to see The Hook or something like it come to Austin sometime soon.

Oh man... that was close.

With the Pats not going to the Superbowl, I don't have to worry about travelling next weekend. And with the Saints out, I know the Coldtowne folks will be focused, as well :D

I may be back in August, as well, because I was just asked by the Salt Lake City Slam Poetry Team to coach them. It would be wild to come to Austin for both of my great loves.

At any rate, I am super excited to come see you all again and teach my passion. I don't know if we'll see a repeat pool-side wrestling match with Trew, but I promise to party and do some liver damage. And possibly play Burger Head. ;)

I also just wanted to talk briefly about the Good Meta class.

JoKyR and Jesster use these techniques a lot. We started doing it as just a way to have fun with each other on stage, but realized that we could have honest discussions that brought our own lives on stage and do them in a scenic fashion. We taught this as part of a duo class in Philadelphia and the students really loved it, so I wanted to do this as a whole class. I really think this is something unique we bring to the table and am very excited to workshop with you guys.

See you in a week!!

It pains me to say I cannot attend the meta class. Ouch.
