Glad to see you are a pile maker as well. I think all of my piles viz the AIC are clear now that Arthur finally has back his Del Close comic books. Brenner, that's another story.

I think I finally decided on my theme: Afro-pop. I'm wildly unqualified to compile it, but this is what I'm doing anyway.

My inspiration is this: this past year during SXSW I went to see a Scion concert that was technically not a part of the festival but which was taking place at Stubbs during the same weekend and it was free. The concert was by Femi Kuti, son of the father of afrobeat and political activist, Fela Kuti. Femi is quite the musician in his own right and this man sells out soccer stadiums in his native Nigeria and across Africa. The crowd he had this cold drizzly day in the 'live music capitol of the world' was fewer in number than his twelve piece band and three back up singers/dancers on stage. It did not matter.

The previous night I was in a show, and I don't remember the details of it now except for the fact that I was endowed as a character I really didn't want to play and I gave it half-assed response. I failed to commit to it.

Flash forward a day and there's about 10 africans and one white boy huddled next to the cover of the stage. Femi didn't look dissapointed, didn't comment on it, and somehow didn't ignore it either. He and his orchestra gave an incredible, and I do mean incredible performance. It was three hours long where he switched between five instruments and singing and dancing but never took a pause long enough to even have a glass of water. It was remarkable - he committed to it like no other even if the circumstances weren't the best.

The happy ending to this story is that the weather cleared up somewhat and the rockin' music lured people into the venue such that the stubbs field was completely packed by the time he did his encore. While completely shamed by my performance the night before, I also learned that committment is not just about responsibility or a length of time - but about being there in the time that you're there, about taking what you have and being of the moment. It's still a challenge to do this on stage and it'll always be one in life - but it was inspiring. Inspiring enough for me to dedicate my mix to the music experience that has had the most influence on my improv.

(p.s. - it's also some pretty awesome music - I can't wait to share)

I saw a pretty awesome documentary on Fela in chicago. It was like he was so full of music that he just had to leak it out slowly through these marathon concerts or he would explode and the volume of the shockwave would destroy the world.
