FACT OF THE DAY: The first news of the D-Day invasion to reach England was carried by a pigeon named Gustav, who was released by Reuters correspondent Montague Taylor from an observation ship when the landings commenced. Gustav flew 150 miles in just over five hours, delivering the news that the invasion had begun while the fleet was still under radio silence.
