FACT OF THE DAY: Two-cycle engines—common in power tools and light vehicles—are exceptionally polluting. In a 2011 test, Edmunds found that a two-cycle leafblower emits over 20 times as much carbon monoxide, and nearly 300 times as many non-methane hydrocarbons, as a Ford F-150 pickup truck. A half-hour of leafblowing emits more hydrocarbons than driving the pickup from Seattle to Key West.
