FACT OF THE DAY: On August 16, 1956, a remotely-controlled US Navy airplane lost contact with the ground and began flying aimlessly over Los Angeles. Air Force fighter jets intercepted the plane and fired a total of 208 rockets, all of which missed, but started a series of brush fires. The wayward plane finally ran out of fuel and crashed in an unpopulated area near Palmdale CA. The incident is referred to as the “Battle of Palmdale.”
