FACT OF THE DAY: On April 17, 1972, astronaut Ken Mattingly lost his wedding ring while taking a sponge bath inside the Apollo 16 capsule en route to the moon. Even though the capsule was hardly bigger than a phone booth, the ring remained missing for seven days. Finally during a spacewalk on April 24, fellow astronaut Charles Duke saw the ring floating out the open hatch into space—whereupon it bounced off the helmet of Ken Mattingly, still outside, and ricocheted back into the capsule.
