FACT OF THE DAY: During a 1941 stopover at a Soviet naval base, the crew of the British submarine HMS Trident were gifted a female reindeer by the Soviet commander. The reindeer, named Pollyanna, lived on the submarine for six weeks, eating spare food and bedding in the captain’s quarters. After six weeks she was returned to shore in the UK, and lived at the London Zoo until 1947.
