FACT OF THE DAY: In 1696 King William III introduced a tax on windows in an attempt to progressively tax the wealthy, whose houses were larger. Many taxpayers bricked over windows in their homes rather than pay the tax. Even though the tax was repealed in 1851, many bricked-up windows remain in England.
