FACT OF THE DAY: The laryngeal nerve, which controls the larynx, loops under the aorta on its way from the brain to the neck. This is believed to be a quirk of evolution, since the same nerve takes a direct route in fish. In giraffes, the laryngeal nerve is up to 15 feet long; among some dinosaurs it would have been over 90 feet long.
