FACT OF THE DAY: In the 1930s, to counter suspected Japanese spying, the US government restricted offshore fishing in Hawaii. The government compensated for the lack of meat by shipping tons of Spam to the state. As a result, Spam is especially popular in Hawaii to this day; it appears on menu items at both McDonald’s and Burger King.
