FACT OF THE DAY: In 1938 Woolworth began selling a wallet that came with several sample cards. These included a fake Social Security card with a real Social Security Number—that of Hilda Schrader Whitcher, secretary at the wallet manufacturer. Whitcher’s SSN was subsequently claimed by as many as 40,000 people for decades afterward; in 1977 it was found that more than a dozen people were still using it.
