FACT OF THE DAY: The first reliable pregnancy test, invented in the 1950s, involved injecting a woman’s urine under the skin of an African clawed frog. If the woman was pregnant, the frog would lay a batch of eggs several hours later. An earlier test involved doing the same to a rabbit and then dissecting it to see if its ovaries had grown; “the rabbit died” was briefly a euphemism for pregnancy.
