FACT OF THE DAY: In the 1950s the citizens of Vernon FL (population ~500) began a macabre trend of shooting or otherwise injuring a hand or foot, then collecting insurance payments on the injury. By the early 1960s, Vernon was responsible for roughly two-thirds of all loss-of-limb-related insurance claims in the United States; roughly 10% of the town’s population made such claims during the decade.
