FACT OF THE DAY: The counties in Alabama and Georgia with the highest minority populations form a crescent that closely aligns with the locations of slave plantations in the 19th century. Geologist Steven Dutch recently discovered that this crescent follows a 100-million-year-old coastline, which millions of years later converted to rich soil ideal for farming. This coastline can be discerned in modern electoral maps.
