FACT OF THE DAY: The indigenous people of Yap, a tiny island in the Philippine Sea, used large carved rocks called “rai stones” as currency until the 20th century. The stones’ value was determined by their size and provenance; the largest (up to six feet in diameter) were transferred between owners without being physically moved. One in particular sits on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean but is still in circulation.
