FACT OF THE DAY: In the late 19th century, residents of Boonville, CA developed their own dialect of English called Boontling. At its peak, the pseudo-language was spoken by 1,000 people, included about 1,600 words, and was taught in the local elementary school. Boontling is nearly extinct, with about 12 speakers still living.
Boontling: “The crazeek eeld’m hooted and charlied at the bollnesses branching at the hob.”
Translation: “The crazy old woman laughed and embarrassed all the pretty young women having a good time at the Saturday night dance.”
