FACT OF THE DAY: The Colossus of Rhodes, completed in 280 BCE, was a statue of the god Helios that was approximately the height of the Statue of Liberty. It stood for only 54 years before an earthquake in 226 BCE caused it to snap at the knees and fall over. The statue lay in place for over 800 years, still a tourist attraction, before its pieces were finally sold off.
