FACT OF THE DAY: In 1961, the Flintstones appeared in a commercial for Winston cigarettes, with Fred Flintstone delivering the tagline “Winston tastes good like a cigarette should.” The ad proved deeply controversial—not for children’s characters shilling cigarettes, but because proper grammar of the time suggested the tagline should read “Winston tastes good as a cigarette should.” Despite a general outcry, Merriam-Webster’s next edition declared that “like” is acceptable as a conjunction.
