FACT OF THE DAY: This morning at 6:04am, New York City’s new Second Avenue subway line began service after ten years of construction. The line was first proposed in 1919 and has been a planned part of the MTA system ever since; in 1942, the Second Avenue elevated track was demolished in anticipation of its construction. The line is still unfinished, and construction on Phase II (between 125th and 96th street) isn’t expected to begin until at least 2020.
